CHESTNUT HILL YOUTH SPORTS CLUB UPDATE - December 2020
We have compiled some frequently asked questions about where we are at right now for our winter and spring sports. Hopefully this FAQ will be helpful. Please email Ken Flaxman at Kflaxer@verizon.net if you have any other questions about the CHYSC.
Are children participating in sports in the CHYSC right now?
The CHYSC is following the city of Philadelphia regulations that state no youth sports can occur until at least January 1.
What is going on with basketball season?
Officially, the CHYSC is still in a wait and see mode for basketball. However, the window for getting an IM or travel basketball season is closing. Even if we are able to start youth sports on January 1, our usual gym space is not open to us this year. Our best hope is that at some point the Watertower gym opens, and we can run some basketball clinics. Updates on the basketball season will be sent out as any news occurs.
What is going on with indoor soccer/futsal season?
The CHYSC has run an indoor soccer/futsal program for at least the past 10 years, mainly focusing on the U8-U14 age groups. The club decided not to run the indoor soccer/futsal season this winter with the expectation that any open gym space will be used for basketball. We will return in January 2022.
My child’s travel soccer team usually plays in an indoor league at So Five (or a similar facility) during the winter months. Will this be allowed in winter 2021?
As of now, the CHYSC has not authorized any travel soccer off-season activities. If Philadelphia’s restrictions on youth sports change, interested teams can run outdoor practices and/or participate in outdoor winter leagues and scrimmages. The club had previously decided not to allow the travel soccer teams to participate in any indoor facility like So Five as the COVID numbers and positivity rate continue to stay high.
What about spring soccer?
In the last couple of years, the CHYSC has allowed our travel soccer teams the option of participating in spring leagues and tournaments. We are planning for participation in the Spring 2021 season and will continue to monitor COVID-19 restrictions and guidance for safe play. Details and registration will be released in 2021.
Do you have any updates on the spring sports (lacrosse and baseball)?
The CHYSC is planning to hold our spring sports and will monitor COVID-19 restrictions and guidance for safe play. We plan on starting registration in the next 1-2 weeks, and hope to start pre-season workouts when the city allows youth sports to restart. Expect to see more information about our plans for lacrosse and baseball when we open registration.
Do you have any final thoughts on the fall CHYSC sports seasons?
We are proud that we were able to run our fall soccer and baseball programs in a responsible manner. The feedback we received from players and their families was overwhelmingly positive. The coaches heard from numerous parents about how thankful they were that their children were able to get outside and safely participate in our fall sports.
