FAQs ABOUT SOCCER
The Intramural Soccer program is looking for volunteers!
The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club is a community organization of over 1,400 families devoted to providing team sports for our children. Men and women, parents and non-parents, of all ages and ethnic, racial and social backgrounds, volunteer to coach the teams, run the leagues, and administer the club. Their time and dedication benefit an equally diverse group of 1,300 children who live or go to school in the Chestnut Hill/Mt.Airy community and surrounding areas.
Volunteers do all the work of the Club, and our programs will only be as good as the people who step forward and get involved. Without volunteers, there are no programs.
Within the soccer programs, the biggest need is for Intramural league commissioners, coaches, assistant coaches, and field setup & equipment distribution. Even if you don’t know much about soccer, you can still be a big help. Please click here <insert link to YLUSA volunteer page> to volunteer, and come to the organizational meeting at the Watertower Rec Center on Monday, June 7th at 7:30 PM.
If you are interested or have questions, please contact John O’Toole at chyscsoccer@comcast.net
Attention Coaches: You can volunteer at HERE.
What’s new this year?
This year we are forming 3 additional All Girl Leagues, in addition to the coed soccer leagues. The new all-girl leagues will be for ages U-11 and U-13. Girls will have the option to play coed or all-girls. If we do not have a sufficient number of players in either the coed leagues or the all-girl leagues we will return to the same league formations as in 2009. If we find it necessary to return to the old format you will be given the opportunity to withdraw and receive a refund.
What's the difference between Intramural and Travel teams?
The Club runs two parallel programs, Intramural and Travel. The Intramural program is organized into leagues within the Club. At the U-7 age, the Intramural program is purely instructional (not organized into a league within the Club) and plays informal games. Travel teams play games against soccer clubs from other communities.
Are the programs open to boys and girls?
Both programs are open to both boys and girls. In the Intramural program, we will be offering both coed and same-sex (all girl) formats, to be determined based on interest. The Travel program will offer both girls and boys teams in ages u9 – u15.
Where are Intramural games and practices?
The six Intramural leagues have traditionally had their practices and games at the following locations, although some minor changes may occur between now and the beginning of the season depending upon availability of these facilities:
U-7 coed: New Covenant Campus on Germantown Avenue across from the Trolley Car Diner. Practices/games are held each Saturday in a regular time slot each week, 8:30-9:45; 9:45-11:00, 11:00-12:15, or 12:15-1:30.
U-9 coed: Springside School and Chestnut Hill Academy (CHA) for games; games are typically Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM; CHA for practices (usually Mondays or Tuesdays) - Read Full U-9 Rules.
Note field space has not yet been determined for U-11 and U-13 coed and all girls league, In the past we used the following: Springside School Saturdays from 9 am to 11:20 and Sunday 1 pm to dusk. Carson Valley for games; 9 AM to 12:30 PM; weekday practices are usually Wednesday evenings at the Cricket Club. The Water Tower games Saturdays mornings and Sunday 1:00 pm to dusk. Fields will be allocated in late spring.
U-16 coed: Carson Valley for most games Saturdays and Sundays 1:00 pm to dusk; Watertower or Mallery recreation center for practices on one regular weeknight.
When does the Intramural soccer season begin and end?
The Intramural season officially begins right after Labor Day and continues through the second or third weekend of November, depending upon the age level and league. Rosters are created by about mid-August, so a few coaches may organize informal practices for those who can come before the official start of the season. Your player should hear from his or her coach by no later than the last week of August. If not, please contact the league commissioner for your player's age group listed above.
Is it possible to try out for Travel soccer, and play Intramural as well?
If your child tries out for Travel and doesn't make the team, he or she will be guaranteed a spot on a fall Intramural team. A player cannot play both (except for boys playing U-16 & above, who can play Travel and play Intramural before their Travel season begins for a single Travel registration fee). If you register your child for Travel, you must indicate at registration whether your child will play Intramural if he or she does not make the Travel team.
What should players wear?
Everyone is required to wear shin guards in all 6 Intramural leagues. Jerseys and soccer socks will be provided to all players; in some leagues, players are issued shorts as well. For those not issued shorts, players should wear comfortable shorts. When it gets cold later in the season, players are permitted to wear sweatpants instead of shorts and may wear sweatshirts under their jerseys. Most players wear soccer cleats, but they are not required. CHYSC provides uniforms but not shin guards or cleats.
Are there playoffs?
Intramural teams have regular season games as well as a playoff season (except for the U-7 league). In addition, some leagues may field a post-season Select Team from the league's outstanding players to play one or more tournaments. Travel programs have a regular season only, with a weekend tournament in Lancaster and some other day tournaments.
When are Travel tryouts?
Tryouts are in the spring and teams start informal practices during the summer. The Travel season starts in early September and lasts through November.
Where are the Travel games?
Travel teams participate in the Inter-County Soccer League, which covers teams from Montgomery and Lower Bucks Counties, as well as Northwest Philadelphia.
Where can I find more information about the Travel soccer program?
The Travel soccer program has a separate page on this site with more details, click here.

Registration Tips:
Please be consistent from registration to registration with your child’s name. Changing his or her name in any way will cause the system to not recognize your child, thus creating proof-of-age requirements.
If your child has played any sport in the past 2 years in CHYSC, your child is a “RETURNING PLAYER” even if this is the first time signing up for soccer.
Payments are due when registering
New registrants and those who have not played in the last two years will need to provide proof of age within 10 days of registering.
